My Sweet Pea made her first communion last year. It was such a beautiful day and I wanted to share some of those memories with you as some of you prepare for your own children’s First Communions this year.

The Food. I wanted Sweet Pea to feel extra special on this day so it seemed fitting to start with a special breakfast. Sausage in the shape of a cross; a waffle complete with an m&m cross; and a bunch of red grapes. I found a neat wine goblet at the local Dollar Tree, along with a white plate that I later decorated with a metallic sharpie. (She loved that idea) I would recommend checking Pinterest for “writing on plates” because I am guessing if I had baked it that the writing would have sustained better.

The dress. It was really important that this be super special. I was having a hard time with so many of the first communion dresses looking too adult. So I decided to have her dress made from the train of my wedding dress. Due to the fact that this dress would be passed down, I had Sweet Pea wear another white dress in the car to the church, and then change once we arrived. In addition, she wore her other white dress at her reception.

Here is my dress on the left and hers on the right. I LOVED how her dress came out. So feminine, classy, and simple. She was very involved in every stage of the dress-making process. I love how the seamstress used the applique from my train and pinned it around the sash and the bottom of her dress. It will definitely become a family heirloom.

The Prayer Card. I wanted to give Sweet Pea a little prayer card that was a reminder of her special day. Using the Anima Christi, a prayer typically said after Communion, I made her a card for her to hold in her hand on that special day.

The Banner. Our church had each one of the children make a banner to be displayed at the back of the church. I was really impressed that Sweet Pea did not want to trace or use cut outs. She knew exactly what was important to her, “being holy and pure”, and so that became the motto for her banner.
